We get these questions a lot. Here are our best answers...
What should I look for when hiring a painting contractor?
A professional painting contractor will be clean, organized, & knowledgeable about the process and the products they choose. Experienced companies will be fully insured, have detailed proposals, and ensure their employees are appropriately vetted, trained, and compensated.
How do I know you are licensed and insured?
The State of Ohio doesn’t offer licenses for painters at this time. Always ask for proof of Liability, Auto, and workers’ Comp Insurance. While most companies don’t carry their certificates around, they should have no problem emailing them to you if you ask for them. Make sure to check that their insurance won’t expire before the completion of your project.
How long has Kane Painting been in business?
Kane Painting was established in 2012 by Nick Kane, who has 18 years of experience in professional painting. Nick began painting when he was just 19 years old and was trained by one of the best in the trade, who had over 25 years of experience in the field. In 2018, Nycole Kane officially joined the team as Owner and CEO. Kane Painting paired Nick’s vast knowledge of professional painting with Nycole’s eye for detail and knowledge of technology and best business practices to begin offering a one-of-a-kind experience for our customers.
Can I leave my home while your painting crew works?
Absolutely! We can proudly say that many of our customers trust us with their homes. Our employees have all had background checks and are carefully vetted in our extensive interview process. Our number one priority when we are hiring is to find good humans, not experienced painters. We can teach someone to paint, but we can’t teach them to be good humans with integrity and a strong work ethic.
Do you have references?
We have awesome reviews readily available on Google & Facebook, along with testimonials on our kanepaintingohio.com website. We also have several professional references that would be happy to chat about the work we have done for them, both interior and exterior, upon request.
Do you have examples of work you’ve completed?
Yes, we have oodles of photos and videos on our kanepaintingohio.com webpage, Facebook, Google, TikTok, Instagram, & LinkedIn. We love showing off our work any chance we get!
What kind of paint do you use?
We use Benjamin Moore paint and stain for almost all of our interior and exterior projects. The products we use comes from 18 years of research and using all types of different paints. Benjamin Moore paints deliver a higher quality finish, durability, consistency, and longevity. Depending on the situation and product, we may use some PPG or Sherwin-Williams products if it is required.
Do you offer a warranty?
We offer a 2-year warranty on all of our work. Warranty details and exclusions are included in our proposal.
Why should I choose Kane Painting for my painting project?
Hire Kane Painting because they are a high-quality, woman-owned, eco-friendly, and community-centered company dedicated to 100% customer satisfaction. They use sustainable practices, support the local community through various initiatives, invest in their employees with fair wages and benefits, and continuously strive for improvement in their craft and impact.
Who will be there to answer my questions or address any concerns I may have throughout the project?
All projects will have a lead painter who is able to answer any painting-related questions you may have. If you have questions about billing, prices, add-ons, change orders, project scope, etc. please direct your questions to kanepaintingohio@gmail.com or call/text 330.907.6292.
Do you charge for estimates?
No! Our proposals are always 100% free of charge. Any color, product, or process consultation services are only provided once the proposal has been signed.
How do you determine the amount you will charge for my painting project?
Kane Painting determines labor costs based on how much time each job will take while accounting for hourly expenses incurred. Square footage and surface type are used for calculating paint/stain/material costs. We strive to cover all of the details to be as accurate as possible resulting in lower costs and minimal waste.
Oil-based or Latex (Water-based) Paint?
The choice between oil and latex products depends on the type of project and the desired finish. However, oil-based products have negative impacts on the environment and our health, and latex and waterborne products, such as Benjamin Moore Advance and Scuff-X, are outperforming most oil products so Kane Painting only uses them for certain situations such as to cover stubborn stains, rust on metal, etc.
What are the pros and cons of oil-based paints?
Pros: Very durable and long-lasting, making them ideal for high-traffic areas and wood trim. Can provide a smoother finish because they level well and dry slowly. Good for painting metal and some types of plastics, resistant to dirt, grease, and stains, making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms Cons: Oil-based products take a long time to dry, typically around 24 hours, which can delay the project. They require solvents like mineral spirits or paint thinner for clean-up and thinning, and they release much higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than latex paints, which can be harmful, irritate allergies, and increase indoor air pollution. Solvents are also hard to dispose of. Most recycling places have a small window where you can drop off these chemicals to have them properly disposed.
What are the pros and cons of Latex-based paints?
Pros: Quick-drying, allowing the project to be completed faster. Since it’s water-based it’s much easier to clean up from unintended surfaces by simply using soap and water. Latex paints are low VOCs meaning less harmful to health and the environment. Having no solvents makes latex paints ideal for poorly ventilated rooms like basements and garages. Cons: May not adhere well to surfaces previously painted with an oil-based paint, but a professional can make sure the surface is properly prepped. Also, dry time can be affected when painting large areas, especially in high humidity.
What is VOC, and why should I care?
As a consumer, you should be concerned about the VOC content of the paint, as it could affect the environment and your health. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, which are chemicals emitted from certain products, including paint, that release gas or vapor into the air. Exposure can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and nausea, while long-term exposure can lead to more serious problems such as respiratory issues, liver or kidney damage, and even cancer. In addition to health concerns, VOCs contribute significantly to air pollution and ozone depletion and can harm the environment. Kane Painting chooses products that are labeled low or zero VOC because they are better for our health and the environment.
Are you an EPA Lead Certified Company?
Kane Painting is EPA Lead-Based Paint Certified.
When I get different bids from several companies, they are never the same; some are high, some are low. Why is there such a price difference?
There are several different reasons prices can be so different. Different companies incur different expenses based on the types of projects they complete, the number of employees they have, how well those employees are compensated and treated, the level of experience given to their customers, and the amount of protection offered through insurance, safety procedures, and training. Newer small companies tend to start a little cheaper than older companies because they have less experience in pricing, fewer employees, and less overhead.
What is surfactant leaching?
Surfactants are necessary ingredients of latex paint. These water-soluble components migrate over time to the surface of the paint. When newly applied latex paint is exposed to high moisture or humidity while it’s drying and/or curing, the surfactants can rise prematurely to the film’s surface, producing a residue or splotches. This residue can be sticky, discolored, glossy, or soapy in appearance. Surfactant leaching frequently shows up in bathrooms and other humid environments on ceilings or walls. While unattractive, surfactant leaching does not harm the coating. Kane Painting uses quality paints to minimize/eliminate surfactant leaching.
How do you test if paint is oil or latex?
For the interior, we would use denatured alcohol on a rag and rub the area, if paint rubs off onto the rag then it’s latex. Exterior we would pull a piece and break a piece, if it snaps without pulling its oil-based.
How to Prevent Paint from Sticking (Blocking)?
The best way is to give the paint proper dry time between coats. We inform the homeowners to leave windows and doors open until fully cured. We remove the weather stripping from front doors so we can close them while drying.
What if it rains while you are painting my house?
After 11 years in the business, Nycole and Nick have learned to be part-time meteorologists. We watch the weather forecasts, radars, and skies, and make sure that we are dealing with the right weather conditions. If by chance a stray rain cloud comes, we will stop and cover any exposed areas from rain runoff. A little rain is fine; latex paint has water in it that evaporates out of it as it dries. We can also use water to thin paint down during high humidity or heat.
How long will it take for the paint to dry?
It depends on what’s being painted and which product’s being used. Some products like floor paint can take up to 24 hours. Decks cant have heavy traffic for 48-72 hours but are dry to the touch in 4 hrs. Wall paint is typically dry in 2-4 hours, and trim paint is dry to the touch in 1-2 hours but isn’t fully cured for 5 days.
Do colors affect the price?
Bold colors, yellows, reds, and whites, can all require additional coats of paint to cover completely.
Should I apply one or two coats of paint?
We figure 2 coats for all projects that are brushed and rolled. When spraying, we can control the thickness of the paint better, so only one coat is usually needed.
Do you use your own employees or subcontracted labor?
All of our painters are employees, but we subcontract power washing services to Ayden with Mighty Wash to deliver the best results at the most affordable price.
